Jampey Lhakhang, Bumthang
Bhutan Tours - Jampey Lhakhang
The Jampey Lhakhang (temple) was built in the year 659 by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo and is one of the oldest in the country (although much of the current construction dates from the early 20th century). The inner sanctum, containing the figure of Jampa, the Buddha of the Future, is considered to be the oldest part of the oldest chapel in Bhutan. The temple contains some wonderful ancient murals (such as the one pictured below).
Outside the main temple are several chortens (stone monuments, often containing relics) including one in memory of Lama Pentsen Khenpo, spiritual adviser to the first two kings of Bhutan.
The Jampey Lhakhang Drup, held in October or November each year, is one of the most spectacular festivals in Bhutan. The 2011 Festival will take place from 10 to 14 November.
