Paro Dzong
Bhutan Tours - Paro (Rinpung) Dzong
Paro Dzong (also known as Rinpung Dzong) has a long and fascinating history, and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture in the country. Built on a steep hillside overlooking the valley, the Dzong houses a large community of Lamas and a school for novices. The interior is richly decorated with paintings and woodcarvings, and has many shrines and prayer rooms, the most beautiful of which are located in the central tower.
The Paro Festival, or tsechu (below left) is held in the Spring (March/April), and is the best known of Bhutan's many colourful festivals (it's also the most popular with tourists so you need to book well in advance). The first day's events are held within Paro Dzong itself.
We are awaiting confirmation of the 2012 Paro Festival dates.
