Cambodia: Land of the Khmers
Novice monk at Ta Prohm, Angkor
The Kingdom of Cambodia is a small nation of just 10 million people, bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, with a relatively small coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. After years of turmoil Cambodia is now emerging as a fascinating destination for visitors interested in discovering its rich history and unique culture.
Without doubt the main magnet is the extravagant architectural legacy of the ancient Khmer Empire. The temples of Angkor have rightly been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO and are generally recognised as the most important historical site in South-east Asia.
Yet there is much more than just Angkor Wat to see in this delightful country. The pleasant capital Phnom Penh on the banks of the Mekong has a superb Royal Palace, whilst in the remote north-east of the country, in the 'Terres Rouges', can be found stunning landscapes and an insight into the timeless lifestyle of minority peoples with their unusual customs and beliefs.
