Your driver and guide will collect you from your hotel and drive you to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, located on Tahrir Square close to the Nile in Central Cairo. Whilst perhaps lacking the clarity of presentation of more modern establishments, this grand old building is unmissable, and contains the finest collection in the world of ancient Egyptian artefacts, including the astonishing array of treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

The museum abounds with famous exhibits, such as the Palette of Narmer (left), which records the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt in c3100 BC, or the superb statue of the pharaoh Chephren (whose pyramid is one of the 3 at Giza); carved from black diorite (below)

For an additional fee you may choose to visit the Royal Mummy Room containing the bodies of such legendary pharaohs as Tuthmosis II, Seti I and Ramses II.

Open daily from 9.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. (9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. during Ramadan).

NEW MUSEUM
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities has long outgrown its collection of artifacts and a new, larger and more contemporary museum is planned at Giza close to the Pyramids.  Although the target date is 2013 it is likely to take much longer to complete this ambitious project.
