A Day in the Kazbegi Region
This full day excursion gives you the chance to see the high peaks, roaring rivers and mountain lifestyle of Georgia’s northern borderlands. You will travel along one of the
oldest roads in Georgia, which the Russian Tsar Alexander I named "the Georgian
Military Highway". Weather-permitting you should see the imposing snow-capped Mount Kazbek, third highest mountain in the Caucasus at 5,047 metres.
Your day will include visits to Jvari Monastery, built on a hill overlooking the old capital of Mtskheta (below left); the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (pictured right), Georgia's most sacred religious site; the magnificent 16th and 17th century fortress and church of Ananuri (below right), an important strategic stronghold near the northern border; and the Gergety Trinity Church on the slopes of Mount Kazbek (this involves a two hour walk but is worth the effort!).
