The Shrine of the Book

To the west of the old walled city of Jerusalem lies the more modern developments including the excellent Israel Museum, home to the famous Shrine of the Book, an innovatively-designed underground hall that houses the priceless Dead Sea Scrolls.  The first seven scrolls were discovered by accident in 1947 by a Bedouin shepherd in a cave at Qumran, close to the Dead Sea.  By the late 1960s no less than 800 scrolls had been found; some contain the oldest existing versions of biblical scriptures.  The distinctive shape of the hall's dome (pictured right) is intended to imitate the lids of the jars in which the scrolls were found.  Your visit also includes the interesting Model of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period at the time of Jesus (pictured below).
