India Holidays - Elgin Silver Oaks Tea Lounge
The Elgin Silver Oaks in Kalimpong was built in 1930 and once belonged to the eminent architect Frederick Desraj. The hotel recalls the days of the British Raj, with hot water bottles in your bed at night - it gets cold even in the hotter weather at this altitude - and 'bed tea' in the morning, served with tea cozies and biscuits. The teak floorboards and watercolours and lithographs reflect the opulence of the old times.
All the bedrooms (below left) are bright and sunny with a magnificent view of the mountains and landscaped gardens.
Service is personalised and available round the clock. High tea with cakes and biscuits is served in the tea lounge or in the garden. Replete with candlelit dinners and tunes from the piano, the multi-cuisine restaurant can make any evening memorable. The Oak Bar (below right) offers the choicest of cocktails and snacks and you can also lose yourself in the well-stocked library in the evenings.
