A half day tour of the highlights of Gujerat's major city, beginning with the Calico Museum of Textiles. Privately owned, this collection of textiles from all over India is housed in a beautiful building incorporating rescued carved windows and doorways from ancient mansions that had fallen into disrepair. Some of the embroideries date back hundreds of years, but there are also modern exhibits. (Pictured right: Pigments, gold and silver on cotton, late 18th century). Continue to the Sabarmati Ashram, founded in 1915 by Mahatma Gandhi, who lived here until 1930 (Gandhi was in fact born in Gujerat in 1869). The ashram is now a small museum dedicated to Gandhi's life and works.
