The Temples of Palitana

The morning excursion to the fabulous Jain temple complex of Palitana is a highlight of a visit to Gujerat, but it requires a certain level of fitness as the ascent of Shatrunjaya Hill, up no less than 3,500 steps, is very strenuous. The temples themselves (pictured) - there are 863 of them! - are scattered around the summit and present an amazing spectacle. There are also some beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. For those who feel they cannot achieve this climb, there is the possibility (for a fee) of being carried to the top in a 'dhooli' (pictured below), a cross between a sedan chair and a deck chair on the shoulders of either two or four men!
