Kerak

The imposing castle of Kerak was built by the Crusaders in the mid 12th century, but was only briefly occupied by them, being captured by Salah-ad-Din (Saladin) after the Battle of Hattin in 1187.  It was subsequently enlarged and strengthened over the centuries under Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman occupiers.  The castle today continues to dominate the surrounding countryside from its rugged spur, and is justifiably one of Jordan's top attractions.  Visit the barracks (below), kitchens, a ruined chapel, the Mamluk keep, the remains of a Mamluk palace and the atmospheric dungeons.  There is also a small on-site museum.
