This palatial hotel in the shadow of the Great Pyramids of Giza has enchanted guests since 1869. Located in 40 acres of jasmine-scented gardens, Mena House Oberoi has played host to kings and emperors, heads of state and celebrities. Its royal history is reflected in luxurious interiors that are embellished with exquisite antiques, handcrafted furniture and rich textiles. A variety of international as well as Egyptian cuisine is on offer at the excellent restaurants and bars in the hotel. This is the perfect place to begin your explorations of Cairo.
Mena House Oberoi has a total of 420 rooms and suites in the Palace and Garden wings. The majority of guests stay in the Garden Wing; a supplement has to be paid for an upgrade to one of the many types of rooms and suites in the Palace Wing (the original Mena House). All guest rooms at the Mena House Oberoi are air-conditioned with private bathrooms. Rooms and Suites are lavishly appointed with traditionally inspired furnishings and rich carpets. All rooms have satellite TV, broadband internet access, electronic safe, direct-dial telephone with voicemail, personal bar, 24 hour in-room dining, hair dryer and tea/coffee-making facilities.
There is a wide choice of dining. Named after the famous Cairo market, Khan El Khalili serves coffee and light Egyptian and Continental meals 24 hours a day. The interior features figured brass tabletops, marble floor and intricate plaster ceiling. Tall arched windows give views over the landscaped gardens towards the Pyramids. The Abu Nawas Restaurant offers a Continental menu accompanied by traditional entertainment (open for dinner only). For a taste of India, the Moghul Room (also open only for dinner) has no rival in Egypt, whilst the historic Al Rubayyat (pictured above) offers dinner with live entertainment in majestic surroundings, with high carved wooden ceilings, huge arches, ornate brass lanterns, and fretwork galleries. For more casual daytime eating, the Alfredo poolside restaurant offers Italian specialities and has a wood-fired pizza oven.
The outdoor swimming pool (open 8 a.m. to sunset) is set in landscaped gardens. There is a spa with 6 therapy rooms and a minigym with bicycles and treadmills.
The golf course at Mena House Oberoi is closed for renovation. The course is being relaid to a new design by Bettina Schrickel and Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is expected to re-open in the summer of 2011.
