Twyfelfontein
A
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, Twyfelfontein has one of the largest concentrations
of petroglyphs in the world, with over 2,500 engravings. Believed to be up to
2,000 years old, the sandstone engravings depict elephants, giraffe, lion,
rhino, hunters and bizarrely, seals and penguins, providing insight into the
life of ancient San. The hunter-gatherers who lived in the region created them as
part of their rituals. Archaeologists have dug
objects from two parts of the site including stone artefacts, pendants
and beads. Twyfelfontein also contains six rock shelters containing
depictions of humans painted in red ochre.
