DAYS 2 AND 3 - Montréal.
Montréal is the gateway to the province of Québec, a vibrant modern city located on an island in the St Lawrence River. Despite its modernity, the city also boasts a wealth of historic buildings, especially in the old quarter, with its narrow cobbled streets lined with restaurants and boutiques. For an introduction to the city's history we recommend a visit to the excellent Museum of Archaeology and History [more]. You should not miss the amazing interior of the Basilica of Notre-Dame. The Place Jacques Cartier is a lively open area of cafes and restaurants, filled in summer with flowers, street musicians and vendors.
Montréal is famed for its cuisine and in the evening there is a host of restaurants to choose from. If you wish to add in a touch of history, you could try the Auberge Le Saint Gabriel [more], the oldest inn in North America (1754). The city is also worth visiting in the winter months (see picture). Beneath the streets of modern Montréal a vast 'Underground City' of shops and restaurants comes to life; it's a great place to come, for example for some pre-Christmas shopping, with prices much lower than in the UK.
Included during your stay is a 3 hour 'Greater Montréal Guided Tour'; discover the city with an uninterrupted commentary of a friendly, knowledgeable, licenced and bilingual guide. A complete tour of the City, taking in over 200 points of interest, including a photo stop at the Notre Dame Basilica, St. Joseph’s Oratory, residential and financial districts, Old Montréal, French Quarter, outside view of Olympic Site, McGill University and a panoramic view from an observation point on top of Mt. Royal.
