Reykjavík
Reykjavík in winter
| Reykjavík | Choice of accommodation (see price grid) | 3 nights |
4 days from £240
Visit the northernmost capital in the world - Iceland’s oldest settlement is now a modern and vibrant city with a wide selection of restaurants, nightclubs etc. Reykjavík was first settled in the late ninth century by Iceland’s first settler Ingólfur Árnarson who gave the place its name Reykjavík, meaning “Smoky Bay”, because of its hot springs, now used to heat the city's houses and the many outdoor swimming pools.
Day 1 - Arrive Keflavik. Drive to Reykjavík.
On arrival at Keflavik Airport take the shuttle bus (not included - current price approx. £11.30) to the Reykjavík Bus terminal where you will be met and taken to your hotel. Recommended flight from London: Icelandair from London Heathrow (see below). If you are travelling from a country other than the UK we would be happy to give you guidance on your flight options.
Day 2 - Reykjavík, the Blue Lagoon.
Start the morning with a 3 hour Reykjavík city tour. You will see the home of the world’s oldest parliament, the modern Hallgrímskirkja church, the lake in the centre of the city inhabited by numerous waterfowl, modern suburbs contrasting with the older parts of the city with their colourful little houses and much more. The afternoon is free for shopping and sightseeing in Reykjavík city centre. In the evening (leaving at 18:00) drive through rough lava fields to the famous Blue Lagoon where you can relax in its rejuvenating geothermal water. The water is naturally rich in minerals and is believed to have healing powers.
Meals included: Breakfast.
Day 3 - Gullfoss, Geysir, Þingvellir.
Today you will join the 'Golden Circle' excursion which takes you to the 'must-see' sights of south-east Iceland, beginning with Gullfoss (pictured left), known as the 'Queen of Iceland´s waterfalls'. The next visit is to the nearby famous hot spring area of Geysir; there has been geothermal activity here for thousands of years and Geysir has given its name to water spouts throughout the world. Next stop today is at the old Parliament site at Þingvellir (Parliament fields) founded the year 930 A.D.
Meals included: Breakfast.
Day 4 - Depart for UK.
Free until your transfer to Keflavik Airport for your homeward flight.
Meals included: Breakfast.
