The Palace on Wheels

Luxury trains were a favourite medium of transport for the rulers of India during the period of the British Raj. After Independence in 1947, however, Indian Railways decided to discontinue these services.  It was not until the early 1980s that Rajasthan Tourism, in association with Indian Railways, decided to launch a special heritage train for tourists, to visit the many highlights of Rajasthan.  Powered by steam engine, the 'Palace on Wheels' made its maiden journey on 26th January 1982.

The Palace on Wheels has a total of 14 fully air-conditioned deluxe coaches, 2 restaurant/kitchen cars - the 'Maharaja' and the 'Maharani' - a bar/lounge and 4 service cars.  All of the coaches have lavish interiors with beautiful paintings and comfortable furniture. Each coach has 4 twin-bedded cabins with ensuite bathrooms.  The cabins have a safe deposit, hairdryer and basic toiletries.  Complimentary bottled water is provided. There is a satellite phone service.  A friendly and smiling attendant on each coach will cater all your travelling requirements.

The Palace on Wheels also has a gift shop - 'The Bazaar' - selling handicrafts and gift items. A separate lounge car is available for relaxation.

Smoking is not permitted on board the train.

The train departs every Wednesday evening from Delhi Cantonment Railway Station during the cooler months of September to April.  There is no service from May to August.
