Aleppo is Syria's second city, with a history going back to the 18th century BC.  Dominating the city from its steep earthen mound stands the 12th century Citadel (pictured right).  Explore the interior, now largely in ruins, before heading off for a walk through the fabulous old souk. or bazaar, of Aleppo (pictured below), one of the most colourful in the Middle East.  The old part of Aleppo has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and at its heart lies the Great Mosque, built by the Omayyads in the 8th century.
